Konover Commercial Corporation & Riverhouse Catering Prove Avon Old Farms Inn Is Still Open

The reports of the complete demise of the Avon Old Farms Inn have been somewhat exaggerated.

It's true that the seven dining rooms that comprised the restaurant portion of the familiar Farmington Valley landmark at the foot of Avon Mountain, where Routes 10 and 44 intersect, are no longer available to the thousands of area residents and travelers who made the eating destination so popular across the decades. But, if you're planning a wedding, a wedding shower, a bar or bat mitzvah, or even a corporate event, you should definitely keep this fact in mind: the quaint and historic structure that's been standing at the same Nod Road address since the mid-eighteenth century is still very much an option for you.

The Avon Old Farms Inn property is managed by the Konover Commercial Corporation. During the past summer, Riverhouse Catering, best known for operating banquet venues at Goodspeed Station in Haddam and The Society Room in Hartford, negotiated to stage about 30 events at the inn through the end of 2010 and very possibly much beyond.

"This is a real opportunity for us and we're extremely excited by it," said Jim Bucko, Managing Partner at Riverhouse Catering. "For weeks now we've been busy enhancing the ambiance and aesthetics of this much-loved place that's been so much a part of the collective memories of its generations of patrons. We've already painted, carpeted and done some electrical work. We're in the process of completing a full structural assessment with an eye toward possible renovation. And we're also entertaining the option of buying the property, or perhaps leasing it. All in all, we're quite optimistic about prospects for a successful future at the Avon Old Farms Inn."

"Our November 12 gala, 'Big Dreams, Big Hearts, Real Hope', had been scheduled for months when we learned the inn's original owner was closing," said Darlene Roberts, Director of Fund Development at Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters. "We'd locked-in Scot Haney as our emcee/auctioneer, Jay Harris from ESPN as our keynote speaker and had secured more than sixty intriguing auction items. Since we're very much in need of the funds expected to be generated by our gala, you can imagine how disturbed we were when we got the news about our event site. But, after meeting with the people from Riverhouse, our concerns were immediately put to rest by their professionalism and impressive track record."
